The department offers a 24 hour service. There is an on call service out side of routine hours and the location of the on call technician will be found on the board out side the laboratory
MONDAY TO SATURDAY
Routine hours are from 8.30am to 5.30pm Please make sure that all routine samples from the wards reach the laboratory by 3.30pm. On call service will operate through until 8.30am the next morning.
SUNDAY
Limited and on call service only
ON CALL SERVICE AND URGENT SPECIMENS
On call runs from 5.30pm to 8.30am Always contact the laboratory before bringing an urgent sample. Please make sure you speak to the help desk or a senior member of staff. Urgent requests for blood should be made in good time.
Specimens considered urgent at any time of the day and for on call purposes should be:
Only requested by a doctor or medical assistant
Arranged with the laboratory in advance
Handed directly to a member of the laboratory staff
Clearly marked URGENT at the top of the form
Tests that will be accepted as an emergency during on call hours:
Haemoparasites (B/S)
Haemogram including ESR
X-match
Sickle test
Pregnancy test (ectopic)
U & E
Glucose
Amylase
CSF analysis
Urinalysis
Any other test that with good reason has been agreed with the laboratory
Mr. Wood is available on 0712-401-707 24hours in case of problems arising on call.
