The school was established in 1992 and originally trained Medical Laboratory Assistants. We now offer the following courses:
Medical Laboratory Assistants Certificate
This is a two year course leading to a certificate awarded by the Laboratory Assistant Training and Examinations Panel (LATEP) of the Public Service Commission. It will enable the successful candidate to be registered by The Allied Health Professionals' Council and be deployed in the laboratories of dispensaries and hospitals at sub district level.
The course covers the basic disciplines of Haematology & Blood transfusion, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology and Epidemiology
Entry requirements for this course are five credits at 'O' level in the following subjects, mathematics & English language are mandatory
· Mathematics
· English language
· Chemistry
· Physics
· Biology
· Health sciences
Medical Laboratory Technicians Diploma
This is a three year course leading to the award of a diploma by the Ministry of Education & Sports. All disciplines are covered at a higher level than the laboratory assistants' course, including; Haematology & Blood transfusion, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, Histology, Research methodology and Management.
A Medical Laboratory Technician with the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology will be able to join the Higher Diploma at Mulago and or the University for Batchelor in Medical Laboratory Sciences
Entry Requirements for direct entrants:
· Two principal passes at 'A' level in the Physics, Chemistry and Biology combination
· At least 5 credits in English langauge, Mathematics, Biology Physics. Credits in Physical science and General science may be taken as substitutes for Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
Mature entrants:
Any candidate with the Laboratory Assistants' Certificate and required 'O' level qualifications and duly registered with The Allied Health Professionals' Council will be eligible for admission to the course as a mature entrant and will start in the first year (currently under revision)
